Delayed Intel Ivy Bridge processors for laptop computers

Published on by batteries-company.com.au

Following recent rumors that the upcoming Intel Ivy Bridge processors might be delayed, Intel has now confirmed the news itself. It now appears that the laptop processors will not be ready until June rather than the spring timeframe originally expected and this is bound to impact upon the thin and light ultrabooks due to have the Ivy Bridge processors and expected soon.

It was on February 16 that Taiwanese paper DigiTimes told how the processor company had told computer manufacturers about a delay for the first shipments. However shortly afterwards Intel issued a comment saying that a spring launch was still intended, as originally stated. Now though, Intel’s executive vice president Sean Maloney has conceded to the Financial Times that the Ivy Bridge processors will no longer ship in spring saying, “I think maybe it’s June now.”

Ultrabooks are the big story this year and it’s reasonable to think that the delay will affect some releases. For example it has been speculated that the new Apple MacBook Pros could be released in April and would include Ivy Bridge processors. DigiTimes reported that a small shipment of the 22-nanometer microprocessors would occur in April followed by mass shipments after June. One explanation offered for the Ivy Bridge processor delay is that notebook manufacturers still have large amounts of devices stockpiled with Sandy Bridge processors and this will allow them to shift more of the remaining stock.

However, in further news as reported by Venture Beat, Intel now seems to have changed its tune again as a spokesman has said there has been no change to the intended spring launch. Apparently a “source familiar with the matter” has said that any delay would only be for a few weeks and not the 8 to 10 weeks that has been reported. If you want to find out more about what Ivy Bridge processors will bring to the picture then you can see a video below this story about this.

At present though it all seems to be rather up-in-the-air as to whether the Ivy Bridge processors are actually delayed or not and we’ll be keeping a close eye on how this develops. We’d be interested to hear your views on this situation.
