Will you buy the Facebook smartphone

Some of you may have heard that Facebook will be releasing its own smartphone by next year. What are your thoughts on this? It is clear why Facebook would want to get into the mobile industry, as this industry is becoming more and more popular and is continuously being developed. The mobile industry is one of the most promising areas for growth and Facebook can find more sources of revenue within this area.

Facebook has already got on board more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the iPhone, which shows how serious the plans are for Facebook integration within the mobile industry. I wonder what the phone will be like? If Mark Zuckerberg is speaking to people who have worked on the biggest selling handset then surely this means that the hopeful plans are to have the new Facebook phone as one of the top selling handsets next year? There were also rumours last year that Facebook entered a partnership with HTC to create a new smartphone codenamed “Buffy”, which is still being worked on. HTC also released the HTC ChaCha Facebook phone in 2011. The phone has integrated Facebook features, including a dedicated Facebook share button. As you can see, Facebook has already been part of the smartphone market even if it’s only been in a small way. Now Facebook is taking on its very own big smartphone project.

Facebook has not yet denied or confirmed a smartphone project but has just simply said that “we’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers”. This very broad statement shows that Facebook do have plans to get into the mobile industry, so we won’t be surprised when a Facebook phone pops up into the market. Although we know that Facebook have plans to create a new smartphone, the company is still keeping the project discreet by doing things like going to specific people and asking if they would like to be involved instead of posting job listings on Facebook’s jobs website. This shows the secretive nature of the whole project.

However, some are sceptical over how successful the Facebook phone will be. This is because many other big names in this industry have found it difficult to mix the works of hardware and software designers. For example, HP and Dell have tried this and it didn’t work for them. Will Facebook be able to overcome this and develop a successful Facebook phone?
